Equal-Treatment Policy in a Random Search Model with Taste Discrimination

چکیده
This paper considers a Burdett–Judd model of the labor market with two types of equally productive workers and two types of firms, discriminators and non-discriminators. Without policy intervention, there is wage dispersion between and within the two worker groups, but all wage differences become negligible when the taste for discrimination is small. We analyze the effect of an equal–pay policy, both in combination with affirmative action and without. When equal opportunity of hiring cannot be enforced, wage dispersion increases and wages for minority workers fall substantially relative to laissez faire. Sometimes also the wage gap between worker groups widens in response to the policy. JEL classification: J41; J71; J78

Does Equal Pay Legislation Reduce Labour Market Inequality?
Does Equal Pay Legislation Reduce Labour Market Inequality? This paper considers a labour market model of monopsonistic competition with taste-based discrimination against minority workers to study the effect of equal pay legislation on labour market inequality. When the taste for discrimination is small or competition is weak, the policy removes job segregation and the wage gap completely. How...
متن کاملUsing Kullback-Leibler distance for performance evaluation of search designs
This paper considers the search problem, introduced by Srivastava cite{Sr}. This is a model discrimination problem. In the context of search linear models, discrimination ability of search designs has been studied by several researchers. Some criteria have been developed to measure this capability, however, they are restricted in a sense of being able to work for searching only one possibl...
متن کاملA Single Supplier Procurement Model With Random Yield
In this paper, we develop a procedure for selecting a supplier. Suppliers are characterized by their lead time, price and quality (random yield). Each purchased item is acceptable with a given probability and independent of the others. We assume the demands are deterministic with no set-up cost and backordering is allowed. For each supplier, an optimal ordering policy is developed. We prove the...
متن کاملEthnic Discrimination in the Greek Labour Market: Occupational Access, Insurance Coverage, and Wage Offers
The paper investigates whether low skilled male Albanians face unequal treatment in the Greek labour market, two years after the national adoption of the European antidiscrimination employment legislation. By means of a Correspondence Test we have estimated that Albanians face 43.5% net discrimination of access to occupations. Concentrating on the equal chance cases, we subsequently found that ...
متن کاملAn analysis of parking behaviour using discrete choice models calibrated on SP datasets
Parking policy is an important component of contemporary travel demand management policies. The effectiveness of many parking policy measures depends on influencing parking type choice, so that understanding the factors affecting these choices is of considerable practical importance. Yet, academic interest in this issue has been, at best, intermittent. This paper reports the results of an analy...
